Blue Girl is a full-parallax digital hologram by Alaric Hamacher, combining photogrammetry, 3D modelling, computational imaging, and digital holography. The artwork demonstrates how modern 3D production techniques can be transformed into high-quality analogue holograms while preserving depth, realism, and fine detail.
Originally created as part of the research and development leading to the International Symposium on Display Holography (ISDH 2025), Blue Girl represents the convergence of traditional holography with contemporary digital content creation. Rather than relying on conventional photographic recording, the hologram begins as a fully digital production pipeline, combining photogrammetric capture with computer-generated modelling before being converted into a full-parallax holographic master.
From Research to Exhibition
The project was initially developed as a research platform for investigating efficient workflows for digital hologram production. During this work, Alaric Hamacher developed several custom tools for Blender that automate the rendering of full-parallax holograms from complex 3D scenes. These tools significantly reduce production time while allowing artists and researchers to create holographic content using familiar 3D software.
The resulting hologram demonstrates that computational holography can become part of modern visual effects, virtual production, and digital heritage workflows without requiring specialised modelling techniques.
Permanent Exhibition at Kwangwoon University
Today, Blue Girl is part of the permanent collection of the Hologram Center at Kwangwoon University in Seoul, South Korea. The hologram is displayed alongside other examples of contemporary holographic imaging and contributes to the university’s ongoing research and public exhibition activities in holography and immersive media.
Two physical holograms have been produced:
- 40 × 30 cm
- 60 × 40 cm
Both versions were manufactured as full-parallax transmission holograms, preserving continuous horizontal and vertical parallax while reproducing the original digital scene with exceptional depth and realism.
International Exhibition in Vietnam
The international recognition of Blue Girl continued when the artwork was selected for the Light Magic – Hologram Art exhibition presented during the ARTTECH Fusion International Conference in Vietnam.
Organised through the collaboration of UEH University, ISCM, ARTTECH HUB, and the Immersive Content Display Center (ICDC), the exhibition brought together artists and researchers working at the intersection of art, science, and immersive technologies. The official certificate of participation recognises Blue Girl as one of the selected artworks presented during this international event.
This exhibition introduced the hologram to a wider international audience and highlighted the growing role of computational holography within contemporary digital art and immersive media.
Chimera Hologram Selection
Prior to its international exhibition, Blue Girl was selected as one of the Ten Outstanding Chimera Hologram Prints, recognising both its artistic quality and its technical innovation in digital hologram production.
Bridging Art and Technology
Blue Girl demonstrates how techniques originally developed for film production, virtual production, and 3D visualisation can be applied to holography. By combining photogrammetry, digital modelling, and custom rendering software, the project creates holograms that would have been extremely difficult to produce using traditional methods alone.
The work also illustrates an important direction for future holographic content creation, where computer graphics, cultural heritage digitisation, and immersive media converge into a single production workflow.
As research into digital holography continues, Blue Girl remains both an artistic work and a practical demonstration of how computational methods can expand the possibilities of holographic imaging for museums, education, and immersive visual experiences.
