The Seam of Goyang – Stereoscopic Cinematography Meets Virtual Production

Alaric Hamacher serves as stereographer on “The Seam of Goyang” (고양의 이음), an immersive media art installation combining stereoscopic 3D cinematography, virtual production, contemporary dance, and large-scale projection mapping.

A World Premiere in Stereoscopic Virtual Production

“The Seam of Goyang” is a new immersive media art production by D.KE, presented at Goyang Aram Nuri, Gallery Nuri, from October 16 to 25, 2026.

As stereographer on the project, I contributed to the stereoscopic production of a series of dance performances integrated into computer-generated environments.

The project represents a world premiere for this combination of stereoscopic cinematography and virtual production within an immersive media art installation.

The artistic concept takes audiences through six scenes inspired by the landscapes, traditions, and cultural identity of Goyang, South Korea.

From mountains and rivers to dreamlike environments and illuminated landscapes, dance connects the different visual worlds.

My Role as Stereographer

Stereoscopic filmmaking introduces an additional creative dimension to cinematography: depth.

Unlike conventional 2D filmmaking, stereoscopic production requires careful consideration of the spatial relationships between performers, cameras, and virtual environments.

My role as stereographer focused on the stereoscopic aspects of the production, helping to establish a consistent three-dimensional visual experience across the different scenes.

The project combined several production techniques:

  • Stereoscopic 3D cinematography – capturing separate left-eye and right-eye images of the dance performances.
  • Virtual production – combining recorded performances with digitally created environments.
  • Unreal Engine – creating the virtual worlds in which the performances take place.
  • Stereoscopic post-production – maintaining coherent depth relationships between performers and virtual environments.
  • Immersive projection mapping – presenting the finished stereoscopic imagery within a large-scale projection cave.

The challenge was not simply to create three-dimensional images, but to use stereoscopic depth as part of the visual storytelling.

From Cinematography to Immersive Space

The finished installation is presented inside a large-scale immersive projection environment, where images extend across multiple surfaces surrounding the audience.

This presentation creates a different relationship between the viewer and the image than conventional cinema.

Stereoscopic depth adds another spatial dimension, allowing dancers and virtual environments to appear with a greater sense of physical presence.

The combination of virtual production and stereoscopic cinematography opens new possibilities for immersive storytelling, particularly for dance, performance, and spatial media art.

Discovering Stereoscopic Technologies

Alongside the main installation, visitors can explore the technologies used in the production.

A live stereoscopic camera setup demonstrates how 3D images are captured, providing insight into the principles of stereoscopic cinematography.

Thanks to the support of Sony, the stereoscopic production is also presented on a Sony Spatial Reality Display ELF-SR2, allowing visitors to experience three-dimensional images without wearing 3D glasses.

These demonstrations highlight the diversity of stereoscopic display technologies, from large-scale immersive projection to glasses-free spatial displays.

Continuing the Exploration of Stereoscopic Filmmaking

“The Seam of Goyang” continues my work in stereoscopic cinematography and immersive filmmaking, exploring how spatial image composition can contribute to cinematic storytelling.

The integration of stereoscopic cinematography with virtual production represents an opportunity to extend established 3D filmmaking techniques into new production environments and presentation formats.

The project demonstrates how stereoscopic depth can become an expressive element of immersive media art, connecting human performance with digitally created spaces.
